LEGAL INTERPRETATION SERVICE IN ASIA

A LEGAL INTERPRETATION SERVICE conventionally refers to the on-site translation of legal content in a verbal format.

It is a highly demanding task which requires a synthesis of in-depth knowledge in legal norms and jargon, translation theory, as well as a decidedly technical appreciation of the relevant source and target languages. The slightest misunderstanding of the legal context, or ambiguity, whilst interpreting may result in undesired judicial or arbitrary judgements being passed. In legal interpretation, first-rate accuracy is not a bonus: it is an imperative.

At Elite Asia, we provide two main categories of LEGAL INTERPRETATION SERVICE:

  Consecutive Legal Interpreting

CONSECUTIVE LEGAL INTERPRETATION is defined as "the process of interpreting after... a speaker...has completed one or more ideas in the source language, and pauses while the interpreter transmits that information" in the target language (Russell, 2005), within a legal setting. This is the most popular kind of LEGAL INTERPRETATION SERVICE, and involves speakers and interpreters alternating in short bursts of speech. Its key advantage lies in the significant amount of time it affords interpreters to grasp the legal context required for interpretation.

  Simultaneous Legal Interpreting

SIMULTANEOUS LEGAL INTERPRETATION is defined as "the process of interpreting into the target language the same time as the source language is being delivered" (Russell, 2005), within a legal setting. This is a more sophisticated kind of LEGAL INTERPRETATION SERVICE, with speakers and interpreters speaking concurrently with the aid of specialised simultaneous interpretation equipment. Clearly, such a LEGAL INTERPRETATION SERVICE can only be provided by highly skilled and experienced legal interpreters, since there is no room for error. Simultaneous legal interpreters typically work in pairs, owing to the intense level of concentration demanded of them, taking turns to rest every 30 minutes or so. SIMULTANEOUS LEGAL INTERPRETATION is often used in major conferences and meetings, where time is short.

Additionally, besides our interpreting services, Elite Asia sells and rents out simultaneous interpreting systems for mass interpretation.
